VR Training Platform for MCI Response

Real MCI is an award winning platform designed for first responders by first responders. The program allows first responders to respond to a variety of mass casualty incidents (MCI) and have their decision making tested in a high stress environment. What is Virtual Reality?

For most of us, our first experience with virtual reality is in movies, where realistic special effects allow viewers to suspend disbelief. Virtual reality game systems also use high-resolution graphics, and when combined with a virtual headset and controls, the real world disappears, and an entirely new virtual world opens up before your eyes.

Fast forward to 2018, and the progressive evolution of Real Response, with the introduction of VR for first aid training. Real Response is already famous for simulation-based first aid training, making the addition of virtual reality first aid training the perfect fit for people who want genuine life-saving capabilities. Real Response offers a range of VR packages and can also fully customise VR development to suit your unique needs.

What Can Virtual Reality Be Used For?

VR has limitless applications for training in the real world. It’s as easy as slipping on a VR headset, glasses or goggles. VR is ideal for military, medical, police and first aid emergency responders, allowing trainees to develop first-hand knowledge and skills while still in the classroom. Real Response course developers come from emergency response and education backgrounds, with an aim to improve first aid capabilities in a ‘learning by doing’ environment.

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional environment inwhich the user can perform actions and experience their consequences. They can move around and interact freely with an animated environment that we have developed to provide realistic scenarios. This is different from 360o video which is essentially a normal video where the user can look around in a 360o Environment.



Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) is when digital information is overlaid over a live image of the real world that is being captured by a camera and displayed on a screen. The digital information could be 3d objects such as furniture or just plain text. This technology can be applied to training in various ways. A likely scenario could be guiding a first responder through the process of administering aid with visual dues and signs overlaid on top of the patient marking positions such as where to place hands when performing CPR.



Mixed Reality

Mixed Reality (MR) can be described in two ways, one involves wearing a headset such as the Microsoft HoloLens that allows digital objects to be placed in the physical world. Users can interact with both physical and virtual objects with their own hands. Mixed reality can be used for various applications such as fire safety training. For example, learners could be placed in a room where a fire has just started, they can decide which extinguisher is appropriate for the type of fire then watch the fire die out as the propellent is sprayed or watch the flames get bigger and engulf the room. The second form is a blend of Virtual Reality with real world objects. Objects in Virtual reality have real world counterparts that are used to enhance the virtual experience.




Although VR simulations create a great sense of realism and urgency it may not be practical or accessible to use VR headsets. Our solution to this is to provide the same training simulation on PC or Mobile devices in a more traditional 3D simulation without the need for a VR headset. Learners can be immersed in a 3D environment which they can navigate using their keyboard and mouse or using on-screen controls on their smartphone or tablet. The training simulations allow for students to role-play, learning in situ and practice decision making through repetition while getting useful feedback. Branching story lines can also be developed to help students understand the consequences of their decisions. This technology works really well as part of a blended training program by driving better engagement and facilitating discussions on the learning material.


Research Capability

Real Response has partnered with the University of Adelaide to investigate the optimal setting for XR training and optimise its integration with traditional training approaches.

The partnership aims to focus on engaging students in an evidence-based approach while ensuring XR systems are integrated in a powerful and cost-effective manner.


Can you recreate our workplace or environment within VR?

Using 3D imaging technology, Real Response can recreate your environment within a virtual space. This means that someone can put on a VR headset and feel like they are in their normal place of work. Scenarios that are ordinarily impractical, dangerous or too expensive to be delivered in a specific environment through VR. Over and over again learners can enter the specific environment without impacting day to day business or putting themselves or anyone else in any danger. This is an incredibly valuable training tool to ensure that people are well prepared to deal with situations in their own environment.

Do we have to buy the equipment?

Real Response provides a range of options for managing equipment:

  • Real Response can manage the equipment entirely for you. 
  • Real Response can supply you with the correct equipment setup and ready to use
  • If you have pre-existing equipment you may be able to use that or you can purchase your own equipment. But please note that most of the experiences will work on specific hardware.

Isn’t the hardware really expensive?

The cost of VR equipment has fallen drastically over the past few years. The same outcomes that required a device costing more than $5000 only a few years ago now can be achieved on a device that costs less than $1000.

I’ve heard that people get nauseous from using VR, is that true?

Some people do experience nausea from using VR. Often that is because they are using experiences that haven’t been developed well or very old hardware. Real Response uses the most up to date hardware and develops experiences carefully to prevent nausea which means that the vast majority of users face no issues.

What’s the difference between Virtual Reality and 360 degree video?

The difference between the 2 is the same as comparing watching a movie on a TV or playing a computer game. 360 video is effectively a movie where you can see all around yourself. Given that it is pre-recorded as a general rule the user can’t interact with the scenario or make changes (like with a movie). Virtual reality is like a computer game, where you are the main character. You can interact with the scene in whatever order you want and you can make a range of decisions that the game will respond to. The game is interactive and responsive.
