The Progressive Advanced Skill Set (PASS) course is an extensive training program that integrates critical elements of first aid and emergency management. It encompasses HLTAID013 (Provide First Aid in Remote or Isolated Sites), HLTAID014 (Provide Advanced First Aid), HLTAID015 (Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy), HLTAID016 (Manage First Aid Services and Resources), and PUAEME008 (Provide Pain Management). This course is designed for individuals who aim to master a broad spectrum of advanced-level first aid and pain management skills, essential for high-risk and remote environments.

Key Aspects of the Course:
• Remote First Aid (HLTAID013): Focuses on providing first aid in remote or isolated sites, covering extended care strategies and the use of specialized equipment in environments where medical assistance may be delayed.
• Advanced First Aid (HLTAID014 - Part of HLTSS00068): Covers a range of advanced first aid techniques, including the management of various medical emergencies and injuries, and the use of advanced first aid equipment.
• Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy (HLTAID015 - Part of HLTSS00068): Teaches advanced resuscitation methods and the effective use of oxygen therapy, crucial for severe emergency scenarios.
• Management of First Aid Services (HLTAID016 - Part of HLTSS00068): Focuses on the organization and management of first aid services and resources within a workplace setting.

Outcomes

1. Emergency Management Skills:
◦ Managing unconscious, breathing, and non-breathing casualties, including infants, in various settings, with a focus on remote locations.
◦ Performing CPR and using an AED effectively across different scenarios.
◦ Handling life-threatening bleeding using tourniquets and haemostatic dressings.
2. Comprehensive First Aid Techniques:
◦ Treating a wide range of conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, envenomation, fractures, minor wounds, nosebleeds, shock, and various other injuries and medical emergencies.
◦ Addressing specific challenges and conditions in remote or isolated settings.
3. Advanced Resuscitation and Pain Management:
◦ Utilising bag-valve-mask (BVM) with oxygen in two-rescuer resuscitation scenarios.
◦ Inserting basic airway adjuncts and managing complications like regurgitation or vomiting.
◦ Administering supplemental oxygen safely and managing equipment malfunctions.
◦ Providing pain management, including the use of restricted analgesics.
4. First Aid Service Management:
◦ Establishing, maintaining, and facilitating first aid services and resources in the workplace.
◦ Conducting workplace risk assessments and developing first aid action plans.
◦ Managing first aid equipment and resources according to manufacturers’ instructions.
5. Simulated Incident Management:
◦ Responding to simulated first aid incidents in various settings, encompassing both medical and trauma situations, without prior knowledge of the casualty's condition.
◦ Employing PPE, conducting thorough secondary surveys, assessing vital signs, and providing appropriate treatment.
◦ Effective communication with emergency services and comprehensive incident documentation.
6. Legal, Safety, and Equipment Knowledge:
◦ Deep understanding of ARC guidelines, infection control procedures, first aid codes of practice, and legal considerations in first aid.
◦ Knowledge of safe work practices, particularly with oxygen cylinders and associated equipment.
7. Psychological Impact Awareness:
◦ Recognising the psychological impacts of first aid incidents on rescuers and understanding how to seek help.
